Digital Media Past

Heather Green

Fred Wilson writes fondly of Pseudo and how the founder Josh Harris forecast the emergence of audio and video online. He knew them better than I did, but I mostly remember how Pseudo, and a host of other digital media startups such as DEN that were created in the late 1990s ran through tons of cash in apparent spending sprees. They were onto something, but unfortunately didn't seem to have the management skills to turn their intuition into anything of impact. And it wasn't simply that they were ahead of their time.

Now, as we have a second generation of companies that are onto something in podcasting, video blogging and online video. And it's good to remember the media companies of turn of the century--so you can figure out what they did wrong and learn from it.
