And the Audience for Podcasts is? Who knows.....
PaidContent and Techdirt dig through the two conflicting surveys from JupiterResearch and CLX on podcasts...and come up with the most logical line on who the audience for podcasts is....No one knows.
Is this a surprise? Are you surprised? I don't think you should be. As Techdirt writes, it's a young technology and a stable market for the audio recordings hasn't developed yet. There is tons of hype around podcasting that needs to be waded through.
I don't know about you, but to me, this is one of the fastest moving technologies I have seen in my 10 long years of covering the Internet. (Fun everyonceinawhile to sound like a grizzled veteran...)
Podcasting has just flung up tons of excitement and has amazing promise as a media game changer. But we kind of still need to treat it like an unstable chemical out of a lab. What shape will it take once it cools down?

Seems to me like asking who listens to podcasts is kind of like asking who listens to CDs or who reads books. It's a medium that can carry any type of audio content, not a genre. Of course the potential audience is going to be very broad in general, but much less broad when you start examining specific genres, show lengths, etc. available within that medium.

I just hope more podcasters write out podcast "Minutia" like Drew of the "Dawn and Drew Show" does ( http://dawnanddrew.podshow.com/dnds-130/ ). Otherwise it's just too hard to know wots 'castin.

I claim no great wisdom or prognosticating skills in this area but I will make one obeservation. When they make it easy to get Podcasts in cars then I believe we'll see a boom in the Podcasting audience. And I don't foresee portable units in cars so much as IPOD players actually installed in the vehicles. The trend will probably mirror XM radio. Just my very humble opinion...

I bet it's not even called podCasting by the time it settles out. I agree with Amy above. It's a general purpose technology. But, I bet it finds several niches, among them commentary with targeted POV, audio books/pamphlets on current stuff, music delivery services. As broadband more deeply penetrates consumer markets, the video component will expand applications a whole lot and things may become interactive. These are my guesses.
