Google is at the heart of blog spam

Stephen Baker

Here's what spam bloggers do. They program computers to create hundreds or thousands of blogs, many of them on Google's free service, Blogger. Then they engineer them to rise to the top of search engines, principally Google. And they're designed to attract Adsense ads, provided by Google. It's an entire Google universe. Our hope is that the Google gang can come up with magical algorithms to corral this monster running loose in their kingdom.

And now B.L. Ochman reports that the top search engine, Technorati, could be on the block. What would it mean if it goes to Google?

I have been interested in how blogs might be used to combine unrelated parties comments on a subject to come to various conclusions. Our coders wrote a simple program and normally it comes up with jibberish. Tonight it came up with somethi... [Read More]

Google and Technorati were made for each other. We know Google is working on blog search right now, and with Bloglines promising a "world-class blog search service" this summer, they need to acquire a large, specialized index to give them a flying start. Google likes to be liked, and Technorati has a lot of good will and loyalty behind it. If any other company takes Technorati it will be seen as a defeat for Google. I'm betting it will hapen.

It's the same game as the email spam, with a new twist. The basics are the same. The core idea is that there are enough wingnuts and lugnuts out there with home computers to make a killing. Thanks for the email, but I have my own little hit squad, thanks for nothing. Ionamut, sums it up. Alleluia.

This is first I saw that Technorati could be on the block. Who has the numbers? Here's an observation. Being popular is more important than being good in the blogosphere. If you can't be good, be careful. It's always something or something else. We used to have New Economy Night in our town. It didn't last as long as the old economy. It was great for the beer business. Have a cold one and have a nice weekend guys and gals!

I've been wondering when Technorati would be up for sale. I think Yahoo is a better fit for Technorati than Google. Yahoo doesn't quite have the techno-geek pull that Google has. Yahoo needs to buy the branding; Google does not.

Blaming Google's Blogger for link farm blogs is like blaming Alexander Graham Bell for telemarketers.

Careful now: I have a short list of corporations I like and one is Google. Why? Because they give me FREE high quality products, such as Blogspot blogs (12 so far), with free Hello/Picasa image upload software and free blog templates I can tweak, and a free Gmail account.

Also: I think Blogger has reduced the number of blogbots making link farm blogs by using a captcha (visual symbol recognition device) during the final stage of blog creation.

The search engines are also learning how to recognize site traffic-driver zombie-blogs by URL configurations, though I need to investigate that more. Wait, I'm at an investigative publication right now. Okay, you do it.

I get almost zero spam in my Yahoo and Gmail inboxes, due to excellant, nearly fool-proof filters. I must say I am impressed. 98% of spam ends up in bulk (Yahoo) or spam (Gmail) folders, so I can check to make sure they really are spam/UCE.

The spam that I have declared war on is blog comment, trackback, guestbook spam. This is still a huge problem for many bloggers. I have posted several essays on this subject at my blogs.

I wish I could turn off URL tags on my blog comments at my Blogspot blogs. As far as I know, I can't. Why do I need URL tags in my blog comments? A commenter could just type in the URL as plain text and I can copy and paste it in my browser address bar.

But by enabling comments at Blogspot blogs to contain URL tags, comment spam presents a danger to innocent, inexperienced blog visitors.

Comment spam URLs may lead to spyware, Trojan, virus attaching sites. They also boost link pop rankings for malicious sites.

good post...raises the question of whether this kind of auto-blogging is good or bad for all parties concerned.

I liked Google better when it was more college football instead of the NFL. I guess blog spam is kind of like ticket scalping and you can't blame a guy for trying to make a buck. I wouldn't order football tickets from a spam blog though. It's summer camp around here and the hitting is just starting. Go Steelers!

I've been looking at some material about a possible music deal between Apple and Google. Finding music online may be easier than finding God. Google has made finding music easier and with Froogle by Google, it has also attempted to make shopping more competitive for online consumers. If Google gives Apple a leg up over other online music retailers and bands selling their own goods, it could look like a monopoly power play. It sure couldn't help competition which drives creation which results in music people want to hear and buy. I can't see Google getting into music, unless this is part of a strategy to get into content. If Google thinks reporters are a pain in the behind, I wonder how they will deal with rockers, rollers and bands.
