Yahoo and Google: Head to Head on Blogging Ads

CNET is reporting that Yahoo plans tomorrow to launch a blog advertising network to compete with Google's AdSense service.

So the question is how will they woo bloggers away from Google? Is it likely to be pricing?

I think a competitive dollar amount combined with more ad flexibility would go a long way.

For instance, I hate the Arial font. I really do. It drives me nuts that Google Ads are all in Arial. I'd like to be able to change certain visual elements, such as the font style, to better appear visually.

I realize there are problems with allowing people to edit ad appearances as they see fit -- big problems. But I think there are a few more options Google could put into AdSense to make it a little more appealing to the designer that values a "clean" look.

It should be the *user* who gets to control font typeface (for readability), not the so-called "designers" who seem to think that having each web site and blog look different and unique is good when it is in fact rather counter-productive for users. After all, it is the poor user who is being forced to *read* those ads, not the artiste who "designs" the web pages and blogs.

Isn't it about time we gave users a break?

Note: in the case of "image" ads (which Google now supports), the *advertiser* makes all the appearance and layout decisions for the ad.

I do run Google AdSense ads on my web pages and blog templates. I happen to use Google's Blogger to host my blogs, so Google has an inherent advantage there.

From my perspective, all Yahoo needs to do is figure out how to make it easy for me to place their ads on my blog web feeds.

Unfortunately, I have a very-low volume presence on the web, so catering to me is far from a success-oriented business model.

My message to Yahoo... rather than merely playing a cheaper "me too" game with Google, how about doing something innovative, whatever that might be. Ads... ads... ads... what's next?

Unless you write a blog on 'injury compensation law' (which I've been told is the highest Keyword buy there is), as a blogger you;re not going to make much money out of Google and I doubt Yahoo. Working with people like Blogads is the way forward.

Blogads is a great service, from my understanding -- but they're invite-only. Which is one of the appeals of Google (and next year, Yahoo): anyone with a website that follows the rules can use them.

Designers have the responsibility of providing a page to their audience that the designer feels best meets the needs of that audience. It's all about user experience. A designer is trying to provide the best user experience possible.

A good user experience isn't one where the user has to make a choice on every aspect of the page, in my opinion.

If the designer abuses readability, his site traffic will drop. I enjoy good, creative, readable designs, and frequest sites that present me with such. I don't want a web where every page looks the same. I want to see people's creativity. Stifling creativity in the name of usability? No way. They just need to live alongside each other. And I feel they already do.
