$58-$105 GREEN FEES

15 MILES FROM PHILADELPHIA

For pure fun it's hard to beat Scotland Run Golf Club, where every hole has a unique characteristic that's both exciting and invigorating. The par-4 second features two separate greens. A deep carpet-wall bunker (with a face of stacked carpet instead of sod) guards the third green. The eighth plays along a sandy waste area and a lake, both part of the old sand quarry that occupied the site.

A wall of vertical railroad ties must be cleared to reach the par-5 10th green. The par-4 16th rides the rim of a 25-foot-deep pit of an abandoned quarry, and the par-5 18th plays out of it to a green with water to its right. Serviced by a beautiful stone clubhouse with a banquet room that seats 250, Scotland Run ranks 17th among New Jersey courses, according to Golf Digest.

18 HOLES, 6,850 YARDS

$70-$75 GREEN FEES

35 MILES FROM BOSTON

The dominant features at Shaker Hills are its dramatic rock outcroppings. The par-4 11th plays over a field of exposed granite. Tee shots on the 18th must carry a deep chasm to reach a plateau fairway. Second shots play over a long spine of ledge rock that splits the fairway into high and low levels to a green fronted by a cluster of four deep bunkers. It's more than a little reminiscent of one of the game's most storied venues, The Country Club in nearby Brookline.

Years ago real estate developer Peter Liebowits was paired in a pro-am with Larry Nelson, who mentioned he was designing courses. Liebowits hired him to design Centennial Golf Club.

On the wooded site offering long-range mountain views, Nelson created three nines of equal attractiveness and challenge. Nelson also built a huge practice area to tour specifications. Nearby four acres were transformed by short-game guru Dave Pelz for practicing every conceivable lob, pitch, and bunker shot. As a rare daily-fee venue in Putnam County, Centennial specializes in corporate hospitality.
