First on the Twister

Dig out the sunscreen and brace yourself for the crowds expected at U.S. amusement and theme parks this summer. Here are some tips for avoiding long lines:

-- Purchase admission tickets in advance and get a map beforehand so you're familiar with the park. Arrive early and start with rides farthest from the entrance.

-- Hit popular rides around conventional mealtimes or while other visitors are watching parades or shows. Spend the peak hours during the afternoon around the hotel pool.

-- All else being equal, if you see more than one line for tickets, concession stands, or rides, pick the one on the left. Most people instinctively go to the right.
