Valeo, a French auto-parts maker, wanted its plant in San Luis Potos?, Mexico, to convey that it built sophisticated, highly engineered components and systems. It erected a column-free building using a modular, tensile exoskeleton. This created an uncommonly flexible one-story layout, suited both for reconfiguring manufacturing setups and for placing production, lab, and administrative areas close to each other. It also let Valeo build a structure 10% smaller than what was originally planned.
