Spun off from The Limited Inc. (LTD), trendy retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF) wanted to swap a drab, nearly windowless headquarters for a new space more in sync with its hip, urban image. It wanted to recruit young employees who epitomized its customers and build a place that would breed creativity and loyalty. The company wanted all this in rural Ohio--a dynamic city environment in a country setting. So it built a campus-like complex aligned along a pedestrian "street" set among 300 acres of open fields, dense woodland, and streams. To foster communication and interaction among the employees, the buildings have indoor and outdoor fireplaces, expansive interior spaces, even a "treehouse" meeting room.
