The Japanese now see the benefits of damning information

PARLIAMENT

An aide to former Foreign Minister Makiko Tanaka claimed that the minister misappropriated staff salaries. Tanaka resigned because of the scandal but denies the charges.

MISTER DONUT

An anonymous tipster disclosed that Mister Donut franchises sold pork buns made with a banned chemical. Sales have plunged, and franchisees now want a management shakeup.

OSAKA PUBLIC PROSECUTOR

Tamaki Mitsui, a prosecutor in Osaka, alleged embezzlement at the agency. Mitsui was arrested on bribery charges just before a scheduled TV appearance.

SNOW BRAND FOODS

Warehousing exec Yoichi Mizutani told newspapers that Snow Brand, a client of his, falsely labeled imported beef as domestic. The food company was liquidated in April.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS

An anonymous tipster revealed in mid-2000 that the carmaker covered up product defects for more than 30 years. Since then, Japanese buyers have bypassed the brand.
