Table: Rx for RNs

The number of unfilled nursing slots will quadruple by 2020, creating strains on the health-care system

PROBLEM

-- Hospital cost-cutting overloaded nurses with man-datory overtime and unmanageable patient loads.

-- Hospitals have been stingy when it comes to buying new equipment that would make nurses' jobs easier.

-- The number of nursing-school grads has plummeted 23% since 1995.

SOLUTION

-- California will impose nurse-patient ratios of 1 to 6 starting next year. Five other states might follow suit.

-- Hospitals have started implementing new technologies that automate administrative and scheduling tasks.

-- New legislation could provide more funds for scholarships, but health-care companies will need to pitch in.
