CAREER

Worked as a computer programmer and analyst and then a stockbroker before starting a brokerage firm in 1988 that he sold to Merrill Lynch in 1995. Appointed chairman of state-owned bank Argentaria in 1996, which he helped privatize. Merged Argentaria with Banco Bilbao Vizcaya, creating BBVA, in 1999.

CLAIM TO FAME

First Madrid stockbroker to own a car phone. It cost him $5,000 in 1985.
