The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression, which won the 2001 National Book Award for nonfiction. The book chronicles his struggles with depression beginning in 1994 and explores the disease from historical, political, and economic perspectives.

REVELATIONS

Solomon writes about his mother's suicide in 1991 after her cancer was deemed incurable.

ON HIS FATHER

Andrew lived with his father for several months during his breakdown. "We spent an awful lot of time together... In the beginning I cried a lot. But as I was coming out of it, we talked about what one lives for and what it means to be alive, what we did during my mother's illness and death. It was more authentic."
