European markets turned higher. London's FTSE 100 was up 11.70 points, or 0.23%, to 5,165.60 even though one research firm says British consumer confidence rose in April.
France's CAC 40 index gained 32.36 points, or 0.73%, to 4,462.74 as the French unemployment rate rose to a 17-month high in March.
Germany's DAX index was up 33.16 points, or 0.66%, to 5,041.20 as German machinery orders fell 9% in March. The market is also hindered by reports IG Metall Union will call strike soon over wage.
Asian stocks finished mixed. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index was off 48.85 points, or 0.42%, to 11,492.54. Hong Kong's Hang Seng stock index was up 136.09 points, or 1.20%, to 11,497.58.
