Amex Charges Higher on Analyst Upgrades


Prudential upgraded American Express (AXP) to buy from hold. CIBC World upgraded. On Thursday the company posted $0.46 vs. $0.40 Q1 EPS.

Impath (IMPH) posted $0.29 vs. $0.24 Q1 EPS from operations on 17% higher net revenue, and sees 25%-30% 2002 EPS growth on lower than expected revenue of $235M-$240M. S&P downgraded.

Vastera (VAST) posted a $0.02 Q1 loss (pro forma) on a 46% revenue rise and sees a $0.02 operating loss to breakeven in Q2 on $18M-$19M revenue and $0.01-$0.04 2002 EPS from operations on $80M-$85M revenue. CIBC World downgraded.

Callaway Golf (ELY) posted $0.45 vs. $0.47 Q1 EPS on a 1.9% revenue decline. AG Edwards reportedly downgraded to buy from strong buy.

PacifiCare Health (PHSY) will extend the maturity date of its $735M senior credit facility by two years and record a Q1 charge of $897M as a result of an acctounting change. Goldman upgraded to market outperform.

AON Corp. (AOC) sees $0.56-$0.59 Q1 EPS from operations, citing increased employee compensation costs, and a temporary decline in underwriting business within the brokerage segment.

Service Corp. (SRV) is trading lower after Florida officials discovered human remains during investigation at Menorah Gardens Cemetery in West Palm Peach. Raymond James reportedly downgraded to market perform from strong buy.

Microsoft (MSFT) posted $0.49 vs. $0.44 3Q EPS on a 13% revenue rise. The company cut Xbox prices in Europe and Australia. It sees EPS of $0.41-$0.42 in 4Q, $1.89-$1.92 in FY 03. S&P cuts FY 03 estimate. Merrill reportedly upgrades.

Nvidia (NVDA) traded lower last night on news Microsoft cut Xbox prices in Europe.

Insituform (INSUA) posted $0.22 vs. $0.17 1Q EPS on 13% revenue growth. A Florida pipebursting project slowdown is expected to impact results for 2Q and the rest of the year. S&P cuts estimates maintains avoid rating.

Scientific-Atlanta (SFA) posted $0.33 vs. $0.46 3Q EPS from operations on a 32% sales decline. HC Wainwright upgraded the shares to strong buy from buy.

Qwest Communications (Q) sees lower than expected $6.4B- $6.6B 2002 EBITDA (as adjusted) on $18B-$18.4B revenue. CS First Boston downgrades to hold.

eBay (EBAY) posted $0.18 (pro forma) vs. $0.08 1Q EPS on 59% revenue rise. It sees about $0.17 2Q EPS (pro forma) on revenue of $260M-$265M. SoundView says revenues were below the Wall Street "whisper number," and the firm will likely cut estimates.

CIBC World upgraded Walt Disney (DIS) to buy from hold. Goldman reportedly upgraded the stock to trading buy.

Informatica (INFA) posted stronger than expected breakeven 1Q vs. $0.06 EPS (pro forma) on 12% lower revenue. First Albany reportedly upgrades to strong buy from buy. Wedbush Morgan reiterates buy.
