Table: I-Mode Comes to Europe


TECHNOLOGY

Launched in 1999 by NTT DoCoMo (DCM), i-mode is the world's most successful wireless data service, with some 32 million users in Japan. Now, German wireless carrier E-Plus is launching the service using software licensed from DoCoMo.

BUSINESS MODEL

German subscribers pay $2.65 per month plus data charges. As in Japan, E-Plus will share revenues with independent content providers under a generous formula.

GEOGRAPHIC REACH

I-mode made its debut in Germany on Mar. 16. Other carriers have signed on to offer service in Benelux nations, Britain, and eventually the U.S.
