Table: Brian Gallagher's Mission

The 20-year veteran of the nation's largest charity plans to transform the organization from a simple collector and dispenser of cash into a community problem-solver.

TRADITIONAL

United Way's primary mission has been to raise funds from companies and individuals and hand them out to a wide range of charitable organizations based on perceived need and on which groups apply.

PROPOSED

Local United Way chapters work with communities to devise strategies for dealing with specific problems, such as crime or hunger. United Way then directs more of its funds to charities that target those issues.
