Earlier, on Feb. 11, Moxi founder and then-CEO Steve Perlman vowed in an interview to "trigger an investigation" into who was speaking to BusinessWeek. When asked if he knew anything about the e-mail impersonation, Perlman responded in a written statement: "No comment."
Curiouser and Curiouser
During the reporting of this story, something unusual happened. On Feb. 15, someone impersonated BusinessWeek writer Ben Elgin, who was gathering information for a Moxi story, by setting up a Hotmail e-mail account with his name as part of the address. That person began getting in touch with people associated with Moxi--seemingly an attempt to ferret out who was giving information to BusinessWeek. It is unclear from where this e-mail originated.
