Small Gems in the Rough


By David Braverman Small-cap stocks continue to beat large-cap stocks in the first month of 2002 after outperforming their larger brethen in 2001. The S&P 600 SmallCap index has slipped 0.64% from Dec. 31 through Jan. 30, while the S&P 500 large-cap benchmark has lost 3.01%.

The following nine companies are ranked 5 STARS (buy) by Standard & Poor's analysts. Each has a market capitalization of less than $1 billion.
