Dulwich Picture Gallery, founded in 1811, was a superb building in desperate need of restoration--and expansion. Now, it's a magnificent complex in London that sensitively meshes the glory of the arched brick building with new additions. Updated lighting, climate control, and visitor amenities such as a 60-seat cafe have helped double attendance. As this case shows, "the solution is not always more architecture," says juror Terence Riley of the Museum of Modern Art.
