The BusinessWeek Best-Seller List

From least likely to succeed to the Baron of Baskets: That's Dave Longa-berger's life story in a nutshell. His posthumously published Longaberger combines autobiography with folksy, cliched rules for success. The book is this month's No. 11 hardcover.

A great believer in himself, Longaberger overcame difficulties, such as stuttering and epilepsy, to become an entrepreneur, starting with a restaurant and grocery store. He eventually, um, placed all his eggs in one basket: the Longaberger Basket Company. This expanded version of his father's cottage industry would in time become a $1 billion home-decor manufacturer, employing 8,700 people. Its sales take place at Tupperware-party-like "basket shows," where now the book also gets plugged. The ever-cheerful Longaberger makes business-building sound like a breeze, even when facing layoffs, a showdown with the IRS, or bankruptcy. But be prepared: The relentless chirpiness may leave you feeling frayed.
