Canada Stocks Climb Higher

After a choppy day the TSE 300 closed up 72.1 points to 8018.4. A strong showing in key stock Nortel and in the Nasdaq were supports. Nine of the 14 subindices closed up lead by Idustrials and Financials while Oil & Gas fell further Wednesday (both a slide in crude oil and a technically topping subindex). The TSE 300 needs to return to 8067, Monday's high, to truly improve outlook but activity will likely be quiet Thursday ahead of Friday's U.S. employment report.

The Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100 index ended lower by 23.80 points, or 0.40% to 5904.20 even though the April CBI retail index rose to 32% from 30% and the construction index rose to 57.3 from 56.9. In Germany, the DAX Index closed lower by 65.50 points, or 1.05%, to 6199.01 following a report that the German manufacturing index fell to 49.3 in April from 51.1 in March. In France, the CAC 40 lost 67.12 points, or 1.19%, to 5572.91.

In Asian trading, Japan's Nikkei index lost 3.82 points (0.03%) to close at 14,421.64. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng surged 428.20 points, or 3.20%, to close at 13814.24.
