Analyst Kevin McCarthy says Dell took the lead from Compaq Computer (CPQ
) in U.S. NT server shipments for the first time in Q1. He says the head of Compaq's U.S. server operation "declared war" on Dell last week, explicitly giving salespeople more rope to compete on price.
McCarthy says the principal threat to industry fundamentals is further margin erosion in the NT server market. He notes that NT servers represent one-third of Dell's profits, and almost half of Compaq's. For Dell, he sees $0.82 fiscal 2002 (Jan.) EPS, and $1.10 fiscal 2003.
