Table: How to Protect Yourself


1. Read your mail carefully, and for the next few weeks at least, don't toss anything that looks like junk mail. It could be a privacy notice.

2. Read each notice and understand how each firm handles your personal and financial information. Notices will not be uniform.

3. If you're unhappy, exercise your right to bar disclosure of your information--and reply promptly. If you don't, financial institutions can assume you accept.
