It's like no other workplace you've ever been in. Olive's Ayse Birsel has stripped down the essence of "office" to its basics--a person, technology, and space--to create a fluid, organic work environment that sits under a tree-like canopy. Walls and panels are gone. Power and data flow out of a pole, to which a gently sloping, leafy "frond" is attached, providing just a bit of privacy. It's a way, way open work space. Herman Miller Resolve workstations range from $4,000 to $9,000.

But beware, Herman Miller, your Aeron chair finally has a serious competitor. Steelcase and IDEO have designed the Leap chair, which supports the back by adapting to each person's "spineprint." There are upper- and lower-back supports that are independently adjustable. Price: $1,000.

Are you a "knowledge athlete"--an engineer, software writer, architect, Web-site designer, or customer rep-- who logs hours at the computer every day? An adjustable table could help an aching back. The Herman Miller Levity Tower moves with fingertip pressure--up, for standing up to work, and down for sitting, even on the floor. Price: about $2,500.
