Random Access: A Soup-to-Nuts Network

Give up--you'll never be a techie, a geek, or a nerd. If you're tired of pretending you know this stuff, check out CenterBeam Inc. For a monthly per user fee starting at $165 (10-user minimum), the Santa Clara (Calif.) company will build an office network, back it up via a fast Internet connection, troubleshoot problems over the Web with 24-hour online tech support, and replace faulty components the next business day. Besides computers and printers, the network includes a wireless server and fast Internet access via a digital subscriber line (DSL) connection. CenterBeam's services are now available in parts of Northern and Southern California, and the company expects to expand nationally in early 2000, wherever DSL is available (408 844-0900, www.centerbeam.com).By Wayne Kawamoto
