A SUITE OF SUITS FOR MICROSOFT

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO TODAY--to court? In early May, the Justice Dept. and about a dozen states are expected to file new antitrust suits against Microsoft, say sources close to the probes. Justice and the states would file separate suits, but all will be based on issues mapped out in the federal action. The suits are likely to seek bans that will keep Microsoft from requiring PC makers to install its "desktop" as the first screen seen when users turn on their machines. The suits also may require Microsoft to offer a browser-free version of the to-be-released Windows 98 and seek some curbs on the changes Microsoft can make to Sun Microsystems' Java software, a potential threat to Windows.EDITED BY PAT WECHSLER
