FOR A HYBRID CAR, STEEL IS TOO HEAVY (int'l edition)

Detroit's problem is that it is still thinking steel and trying to develop a drive for cars that is four times too heavy ("Detroit's impossible dream?" American News, Mar. 2). It needs to think in whole-system terms and start with a lightweight, aerodynamically slick car. The first company that moves will have a huge marketing advantage. Somewhere out there are some great engineers working for some great managers. It's going to happen.
