Investment Figures of the Week

COMMENTARYBlue chips took a drubbing this week, as worries about third-quarter corporateearnings spread through the markets. Especially hard hit were themultinationals in the Dow Jones industrials that could get hurt from the strongdollar. IBM, for example, was down more than six dollars for the week, fallingthree on Sept. 10, when the Dow plunged 132 points. On the other hand, theNASDAQ composite index, reflecting robustness in high-tech and smaller-capstocks, was up at midweek. On Sept. 9, the index set an all-time high.STOCKS
