Investment Figures of the Week

COMMENTARYInflation fears roiled the markets. A larger-than-expected gain in retail salessent the Dow plunging 160 points early in the week--the index's largest drop inalmost eight months. Meanwhile, the prospect of a rate hike sent the 30-yearTreasury bond yield up 7 basis points, to 6.95%. A few days later, an uptick inthe consumer price index and weekly average earnings sent the Dow down again, with technology and bank stocks pacing the decline. The tech-heavy NASDAQComposite lost 4.2% for the week.
