THE `NEW ORDER' BRINGS NO POWER TO THE PEOPLE (int'l edition)

Your editorial "The Age of Finance" (Jan. 13) sings the praises of global financial markets and monetary discipline to enforce economic policies. But those things have their shortcomings. I have lived through several devastating depreciations of the peso in Mexico. For the populace, believe me, it has not been pretty. The new order--globalized free trade and financial markets with "staggering gain" in the last quarter century--has yet to bring significant gains in quality of life to most of the people.

FAMILY AND FAITH WILL REVIVE PAUL REICHMANN (int'l edition)

Your article on the Reichmanns ("Faith, Fortune, and Paul Reichmann," Cover Story, Jan. 20) was both inspiring and humbling. It provided great lessons for all on how fast empires can crumble with the change of economic tide. Humans are indeed fallible. Paul Reichmann never lost sight of what is truly important: family and faith. He will succeed again.
