Investment Figures of the Week

COMMENTARYThe Dow Jones industrial average came within a hair of 6000. The Dow's ascentto 5992.9 on October 4 was fueled by an unexpected drop in employment, whichsoothed inflation fears and sent the yield on the 30-year Treasury bond from6.83% to 6.74%. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index and the Nasdaq CompositeIndex also hit new highs. But concerns about weakening corporate profits andrising interest rates jolted markets in mid-week, sending the 30-year bondyield up to 6.83% and the Dow down to 5930.6.MARKET ANALYSIS
