FAMILY AFFAIRS

Until 1985, Harvard University and Hillsdale College in Michigan were alone in teaching such distinct business topics as how to pass the torch from father to daughter or how to demote junior. Now, 62 colleges have family programs--from Babson College to University of Southern California. Why? Growing demand, says Randel Carlock, who runs the program at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. Droves of World War II vets who launched businesses are retiring as corporate job prospects dim for their heirs. On the curriculum: family dynamics, managing conflict, and gender issues.EDITED BY I.
