Investment Figures of the Week

COMMENTARYFlush with cash from mutual-fund investors, the stock market soared and the DowJones industrials established a new high of 5630 on Feb. 23. But under thepressure of a falling bond market and rising long-term interest rates, the bluechips gave up the gains and closed slightly down for the week. Midcap andsmall-cap stocks managed to hold onto their gains. Even the good news oninflation contained in the January producer price and consumer price indexescould not spur the bond crowd to buy.MARKET ANALYSIS
