PAVEMENT POUNDING 101

College students graduating during the current academic year face a modestly improved but still difficult job market. According to employers surveyed by Michigan State University's Collegiate Employment Research Institute, hiring of new grads should rise by 4.7% this year, a bit less than in 1994-95. But that still leaves hiring levels far below their 1989 peak.

"Job hunting will remain tough, unfriendly, and quite competitive," says CERI Director L. Patrick Scheetz.

Average starting salaries for new graduates with bachelor's degrees will be up just 1.4% to 2.9% this year and are projected to run from a low of $20,154 for journalism majors to a high of $41,182 for lucky chemical engineers. The average starting pay for newly minted MBAs: $40,425.BY GENE KORETZ
