SHARP-EYED SCANNER

The PaperMax from Visioneer Inc. (800 787-7007) redefined desktop scanning when it was introduced last year. Now, the latest version, the PaperPort Vx, refines that concept. The redesigned unit is still small enough to nestle behind your keyboard, but improved resolution makes the new PaperPort much better suited to scanning documents for character recognition. In combination with a printer, it can also be a copier. The included software allows you to move anything you have scanned to another program, such as fax or word processing software, just by dropping its image onto an icon. The estimated street price for either the Windows or Macintosh version is $369. A similar unit will be marketed by Hewlett-Packard Co. as the ScanJet 4s.BY STEPHEN H. WILDSTROM
