-- Soon, sunny-side-up eggs may no longer carry a threat of food poisoning, thanks to researchers at Purdue University. The scientists have developed a way to heat-pasteurize eggs, killing those nasty salmonella bugs--without hardening the egg yolk or the white. The research team, led by food-processing engineer Rakesh K. Singh, has applied for a patent.

-- ENV America in Irvine, Calif., and High Mesa Technologies in Santa Fe, N.M., have begun testing an alternative to incineration for destroying such noxious wastes as paint thinners and jet fuel. Burning these liquids can produce dangerous air pollution. But the new cold-plasma technology developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory uses powerful chemicals called free radicals to oxidize hazardous waste inside sealed chambers.
