Diversity At American Family

Readers Report

DIVERSITY AT AMERICAN FAMILY

Your story "Are life insurers biased--or just careful?" (Legal Affairs, Oct. 16) contained a factual error. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) lawsuit mentioned in the story was not filed "against the American Family Life Insurance Group." Indeed, there is no such entity. The lawsuit involved American Family Mutual Insurance Co., and in no way involved our life company.

Second, we remain puzzled why your reporter would dredge up a decade-old racial quote by one of our employees, who was later fired. Anyone familiar with American Family knows this company absolutely forbids unlawful discrimination. In addition, our urban marketing program, our new metropolitan service centers, and our efforts to hire employees and agents from all cultures show a commitment to seek wide diversity among our customers.
