A CRUCIAL DEFEAT FOR DOW CHEMICAL?
THE TIDE MAY HAVE FINALLY turned against Dow Chemical. After successfully dodging much of the liability in the massive silicone breast-implant litigation, the manufacturer was hit on Oct. 30 with $14.1 million in compensatory and punitive damages. The Nevada jury's verdict, which Dow vows to appeal, marks the first time the company has been held solely responsible for injuries allegedly suffered because of defective implants made by now bankrupt Dow Corning, jointly owned by Dow Chemical and Corning. If upheld, the verdict could devastate Dow Chemical: It is a defendant in over 13,000 implant-related lawsuits.EDITED BY KEITH H. HAMMONDS
