ONE-STOP SHOPPING ON THE NET

U S WEST PLANS TO ANNOUNCE on Oct. 11 a venture with high-tech all-stars Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Netscape, and Lotus Development to try to take the lead in marketing Internet services to clients. The idea: to create a one-stop shop for companies that want to do everything from setting up pages on the World Wide Web to sending sensitive data over the Net to suppliers. "This is a huge new frontier," says Executive Vice-President Catherine Hapka, 41, who is leading the effort. Some analysts say U S West has done more legwork than AT&T, MCI, and BellSouth, which plan similar services.EDITED BY THANE PETERSON
