A DOUBLE STANDARD FOR TRUSTBUSTERS? (int'l edition)

I see conflicting views in two articles in your June 26 issue. In "Oh, Microsoft. Poor Microsoft" (American News), the U.S. Justice Dept., industry observers, and Microsoft Corp. competitors are concerned about Microsoft leveraging its leading position in desktop operating systems to enter the online-services market. But in "Soft(ware) in the head?" (American News), no one seems concerned about IBM's acquisition of Lotus Development Corp. By acquiring Lotus, IBM will leverage Lotus' leading position in the groupware market to sell all sorts of non-groupware products and services, particularly OS/2. Therefore, I do not see why Justice should not let market forces shape the nascent online business.
