DEMOCRATS' TOP FUND-RAISER

Direct-mail donations are pouring into the Democratic National Committee, thanks to...Newt Gingrich. Party fund-raising appeals portray the House Speaker as an extremist out to gut Medicare, student loans, and other middle-class benefits. The result, says DNC Co-Chairman Donald L. Fowler: a record 131,000 new donors in the first five months of 1995, up from 90,000 for all of 1994. The gifts--averaging $20--have helped the DNC make a dent in its debt, which stood at $4 million at the start of the year.EDITED BY OWEN ULLMANN
