SENIOR CITIZEN: `I AM ASHAMED'

I agree with your article "Victims of the golden years" (News: Analysis & Commentary, May 22).

I am tired of listening to elected officials use glib rhetoric to avoid taking responsibility for the jobs they were elected to do. I am ashamed, as a senior citizen, when the national budget devotes more money to the needs of the elderly than to those of our children. And I am frustrated by the "me first" rhetoric from all the special interest groups who seem to be in a frenzy to participate in the "entitlement feast." Social Security should not be paid unless the recipient needs it! Likewise Medicare.

Once upon a time, the American Dream was to prosper and provide a better life for our children. Now, it is clearly to receive more from society than we contribute.
