THE FAA'S FAITH IN BOEING

A COUP FOR BOEING AND ITS president, Philip Condit: On May 30, the Federal Aviation Administration granted unprecedented approval for the company's 777 plane to begin over-water flights without two years of in-service tests. This promises to broaden the immediate market for the 777--and bolster Condit's chance of succeeding CEO Frank Shrontz by yearend. Condit headed the 777 launch, working closely with customers and employing new computer-based design methods and engineering-manufacturing teams.
