THE VALUE OF VALUJET

I have followed ValuJet from its inception, and I know many have benefited from the airline's success ("Growing pains at ValuJet," News: Analysis & Commentary, May 15).

Rapid expansion at ValuJet contributed to Atlanta's being the fastest-growing large airport last year. The airline is such a boost to local economies that other cities have encouraged ValuJet to start serving their communities. The public has gained the most since ValuJet's advent, by saving hundreds of millions of dollars in airfares.

The founders and stockholders have done well. But the initial investors took a great risk in starting ValuJet. With good management and employee relationships, it could become the first successful new passenger airline in the U.S. in decades.
