TRADE PACTS: LET'S NOT BE REGIONAL ABOUT THIS

Regarding the question raised by your May 8 editorial, "A U.S.-Europe trade pact? Why not?" I'll tell you why not.

Instead of a trade pact pressuring protectionist Asians to pursue free-trade principles (your ardent hope), it could well intensify inward-looking regionalism in Asia and elsewhere. Having recognized the costly divisiveness of economic nationalism, we should not be nurturing the costly divisiveness of economic regionalism.
