Senate Banking Committee Chairman Alfonse D'Amato (R-N.Y.) slammed Treasury for stonewalling a request last winter for internal documents on the handling of the Mexican peso crisis. But Treasury claims it couldn't comply quickly: None of D'Amato's committee staffers had security clearances. A few weeks later, the staffers got clearances--and hundreds of pages of sensitive material.
