Where are the best places to open a bookstore? In major metro areas, it's San Jose, Calif. Those Silicon Valley types read books as well as computer screens. New York, the nation's literary capital, and Boston, with its intellectual ambience, are No.2 and No.3. If you're looking for the highest-volume business, go to a small university town. Seven such places do a bigger per-bookstore business than San Jose. The leader is Bryan-College Station (home to Texas A&M), with sales of $2.1 million per store.
