COMMENTARY

A raft of strong earnings reports helped reverse the Dow's losses from early in

the week, and the stock market closed on an up note. Eastman Kodak made a big

splash, gaining 45/8 after reporting an 81% rise in operating profits. Friction

over trade with Japan initially weakened the dollar, but the greenback

rebounded against the mark and yen after a government report showed a narrowing

of the trade deficit with Japan. The still-weak dollar fed inflation fears, and

the long bond's yield rose to 7.36%.
