REFIGURING STATISTICS

Amid growing criticism that current data collection and analysis miss fundamental changes in the U.S. economy, the Clinton Administration has begun a high-level review of the government's far-flung economic statistics agencies. The goal of the review, being conducted by a task force that includes officials from the Office of Management & Budget, the Council of Economic Advisers, and the Commerce and Labor Depts., is to boost cooperation among sometimes rival agencies, many of which are now barred by law from sharing data. Despite the urging of some private economists, however, the task force is not expected to recommend creation of a single statistical agency, such as Statistics Canada.
