THE GIFT OF SOUND TECHNOLOGY (int'l edition)
The article "They're bearing the gift of sound" (People, Feb. 6) illustrates that assistive devices for the disabled don't have to be prohibitively expensive. It also demonstrates how large corporations working with specialized technology developers can, with minor cost impact, broaden the market and help ensure the success of these devices.
There was one misstatement of fact in the article when it stated that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires employers to hire a certain number of disabled workers. ADA does not establish quotas. ADA only states that an employer cannot discriminate against an otherwise qualified individual based on that person's disability.
